We are no longer keeping chickens however if we ever resume there is fenced six acres with more fruit trees planted and four sheds on it to house three hundred chickens allowing two square metres of space for every three chickens with two acres of 24 hour rotatable pasture in a flock of one hundred.

We also planned to invest in a decent sized silo to store organic feed from local farmers listed on the igrain site.

Once all this was in place we planned to set up our own certification to encourage other small scale egg farmers to upgrade their system to that of true free range. We would have open days so the public could come and see first hand happy chickens as well as a 24 hour live cams to educate people about true free range. Above all we encourage individuals to keep their own backyard chickens as well as schools so children in future will hopefully respect and appreciate all farm animals deserving of a stress free existence.

Current Australian certification allows a flock of 1000 chickens on only half an acre of outdoor pasture with ten chickens per square metre of shed space. We find this unacceptable and also are against the practice of debeaking.

If you are a true free range/organic egg farmer we would be happy to link you on our site once we have seen your farm.
